Infant Allergies & Eczema
There have been some studies, although inconclusive, that suggest that breastfeeding mothers shouldn't eat peanuts and other potentially highly allergic foods while breastfeeding. I hadn't read any of this when I was nursing and ate peanuts along with most other foods. My son didn't exhibit any intolerance to the breastmilk, and had no crying bouts, etc. after nursing. I therefore assumed everything I ate was acceptable. www.allergicchild.com
Soy Formulas May Not Prevent Infant Allergies
Soy-based formulas are often recommended for infants with food allergies, but a review of past studies suggests they should not be recommended for the prevention of allergies or food intolerance in infants at high risk. www.webmd.com
Infants And Allergies
Late last year, the results of an extensive Italian study involving diet, environment and infant allergies came across my desk. The study compared more than 300 high-risk infants with multiple types of intervention. The focus of the intervention was in three areas: mother's diet; infant's diet; environmental factors. www.chiroweb.com
Preventing Infant Food Allergies
Although food allergies affect only a small number of children, finding a way to prevent them or at least delay their onset is an important goal for parents and researchers alike. According to a new study in the June 1995 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, high-risk infants who did not consume cow's milk, eggs and peanuts during infancy and whose mothers also avoided those foods during the perinatal period had a reduced incidence of food allergy and eczema in the first two years of life. www.kidsource.com
Allergies And The Breastfeeding Family
Allergies today are more common than ever before--one in five children now shows some degree of allergy by age 20. The incidence of allergies has increased tenfold over the past 20 years. This is partly due to increased exposure to known allergens (allergy-causing substances). It is also because physicians and allergy sufferers are more likely to recognize that certain symptoms or illnesses are caused by allergies (Lawrence 1994). www.lalecheleague.org
Baby Allergies
The theory that babies have to be at least 2 years old to get allergies is still very common. Because the presence of allergies represents an overactive immune system, and because babies' immune systems don't reach normal functioning until age 2, it was thought that they couldn't get allergies before then. Now we know that the immune system doesn't develop evenly and that allergies can indeed be present in very young babies. www.drgreene.com
Preventing Infant Allergies
Preventing Infant Allergies Is there anything a highly allergic mother can do to lessen the chances her unborn baby will have fewer allergies? While pregnant, the answer seems to be no, but after delivery, it's yes. Allergies are due to high blood levels of a certain immunoglobulin referred to as IgE. When an allergy develops, more substance-specific IgE develops. www.myonline-pharmacy-prescription.com
