Allergies Rash – Managing Skin Allergies

Skin allergies, often referred to as contact dermatitis, occur when your skin comes in contact with an allergen. They can be the result of exposure to latex, hair dye, perfumes, make ups, bath powders, nickel, gold, some household cleaning products, and more. The result is what is often referred to as an allergies rash.
So what can you do to manage an allergies rash?
Actually, the approach is fairly straightforward. First, you need to be aware of the condition. A rash is fairly common. Most of us experience one at least a few times throughout our lives. They can be the result of emotional stress, hot weather, dry cold weather, even exposure to insects. They can also be the result of bigger medical issues such as liver or kidney disease. So, one hand it’s easy to dismiss a rash. On the other, it’s important to acknowledge the condition before you can do anything about it.
Second, you want to identify the underlying cause. As we’ve already pointed out, there are a number of potential triggers behind an allergies rash. In fact, there are over three thousand known triggers for skin allergies. Many are natural, but there are those that are man-made as well (latex, for example). An allergist can perform tests to identify what specific sensitivities you have and the severity of your sensitivities.
Third, you want to take care to keep your allergies rash under control. Your allergist may recommend a topical corticosteroid preparation for the inflammation. On your own, you can:
- Keep your fingernails short to discourage scratching.
- Soak in a luke-warm bath for twenty or thirty minutes.
- Use a mild soap or a non-soap cleanser with neutral pH (pH7).
- Avoid bubble baths, since they tend to dry out your skin.
- After drying your skin apply a lotion or emollient cream to help your skin retain the moisture.
An allergies rash can be uncomfortable, unattractive, and a nuisance. But it’s not hopeless. Work with your allergist to identify the allergen culprit and an action plan to get it under control.
